The Going Back to Cali design pulls together two unmistakable pieces of 1990s Los Angeles imagery: the explosive graffiti and hip-hop aesthetic of the era and a visual reference to the infamous 1997 North Hollywood shootout.

At the center of the design is a stylized interpretation inspired by one of the shootout’s most recognizable images—a masked gunman carrying an AK-pattern rifle with a drum magazine. It’s an image that became permanently associated with the North Hollywood shootout, an event whose extraordinary firepower and nationally televised confrontation made it one of the most notorious armed encounters in modern Los Angeles history.

Rather than simply reproducing the photograph, Faktory47 drops that imagery into the visual culture surrounding it.

Oversized “GOING BACK TO CALI” graffiti explodes across the design in electric blue, orange, yellow and white, surrounded by spray-paint drips, splatter, palm trees and the Los Angeles skyline. The result deliberately evokes the album covers, murals, graffiti, streetwear and West Coast hip-hop aesthetics that defined Southern California in the 1990s.
